Introduction

The Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, located in Srirangam, Tamil Nadu, is one of the most revered Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu. During the Chola dynasty (9th-13th century CE), the temple was greatly expanded with magnificent gopurams (towers), mandapams (pillared halls), and shrines. The Hoysala and Vijayanagar kings later contributed to its architectural grandeur. The temple complex now consists of 21 gopurams, with the Rajagopuram (main tower) standing at 236 feet, making it one of the tallest temple towers in Asia.

Islamic Invasions and Restoration

During the Delhi Sultanate’s invasion in the 14th century, the temple was plundered, and its deity was briefly taken away. However, devoted temple priests managed to hide the idol and later reinstalled it. The temple was restored and regained its former glory under the Vijayanagar Empire and later the Nayak rulers.

Religious and Cultural Significance

The Srirangam temple is the first and most important of the 108 Divya Desams (sacred Vishnu temples praised in Tamil Vaishnavite literature). The temple follows the Vaishnavite tradition and is deeply associated with the teachings of Saint Ramanuja, one of the greatest Hindu philosophers, who spent his final years in Srirangam. His preserved body, covered in saffron and camphor, is enshrined within the temple.

One of the grandest festivals at Srirangam is the Vaikunta Ekadasi, celebrated in December-January. During this festival, thousands of devotees gather to witness the opening of the Swarga Vasal (Gate of Heaven), which is believed to provide direct access to Lord Vishnu’s divine abode.
